For this blog we teamed up with Adam Jenkinson from Banana Bathrooms to go through the bathroom trends he has been seeing this year and what to expect in 2021
Adam is the Director of Newcastle based Bathroom Renovation company Banana Bathrooms, Banana Bathrooms was founded back in 2016 by Adam who is a fully licensed Kitchen Bathroom Laundry Renovator and Plumber. Fast forward to 2020 Adam and his team are renovating close to 100 bathrooms a year. Let’s get the low down on the bathroom design trends Adam is seeing!
“We are still seeing plenty of colour and textures being used to create a calming, tranquil and luxurious space.”
Whether that’s in the form of taps, tiles, shapes, wallpapers and plants. More and more people are experimenting with their designs and confidently using colour and texture in their choice of taps, tiles (including shapes), vanities, baths and even wallpapers and plants.
Were definitely not seeing the end of the natural raw materials such as timbers, marble and stone and concrete any time soon.
1. Colour
Adam says they are seeing a lot of calming pastel colours which really complement the raw timbers being used in vanities and concrete floor tiles. On the other end of the spectrum Adam is seeing big, bright and bold colour statements being used to good effect, particularly in powder rooms.
2. Coloured & Textured Tapware
People are turning away from using default chrome tapware and towel rails, instead looking to inject subtle colour with the use of brass, black, gold and brushed finishes. There are heaps of colour variations to choose from to best complement your floor and wall tiles and vanity material.
“There are new textures and more colour ranges hitting the market, you can let the tap ware be the standout of the bathroom. There’s heaps of shapes and varied sizes to choose from!” Adam says.
3. No Standard Vanities
“We’ve seen quite a few custom and no standard vanities being used such as converted dressers, sideboards and chest of drawers.” says Adam.
A beautiful piece of furniture coupled together with a high quality basin and tapware can create a really unique focal point to your bathroom.

4 Shaped, Textured & Patterned Tiles
Standard sized and shaped tiles (yes even subway) are making way for some of the more interesting shaped tiles like hexagon, fish scales, diamonds, star and cross.
If you are not sold on some of the more out there tile shapes, going for a handcrafted subway adds that subtle texture that can really elevate your bathroom look. You can also add texture with concrete, travertine and terrazzo tiles.
Adam’s Advice; “Patterned tiles are still very popular, the trick is to use them sparingly and to pair them with an understated tile so the pattern can really stand out”.
5. Indoor Plants
According to Adam, plants in the bathroom really help to soften all the hard lines often found in bathrooms. Additionally, bringing nature inside really helps you to let go of your often stressful life and relax.
“Besides looking great (especially against some of the raw materials being used like timber and concrete) and the relaxation benefits, plants are great at purifying the air!” says Adam
